\n\t\t\t\t\t\tFootage of the Whaleboat ocean rowing boat Alexia being towed towards Nova Scotia, Canada. She was abandoned when the rowing crew decided to abort their North Atlantic crossing last month due to seasickness, and had been adrift for 14 days.
A commercial fishing vessel found her and towed her back to land, for about 200 miles at 10 knots average. The crew of the fishing vessel was amazed how exceptionally well she rode the waves and handled the heavy conditions. We appreciate the opinion of these professionals, who spend all their time at sea.
When they arrived in port, the fishermen found the full equipment, including a bottle of sunscreen and a\u00a0 coffee mug still on deck!

\n\t\t\t\t\t\tHow long? It`s been almost 3 years since the MV Savvy Joan ended up in my care. In the first year, I spent a lot of time figuring out how to manage the boat out of the water on boat supports.

In the second year, I discovered that the boat was in need of repairs, particularly because the berth in the bow had Aspergillus mold. The fiberglass hull is still in good shape though. The berth had to be ripped out and rebuilt. That`s what I did this past year.

I didn`t know if I could do it. Especially because, the boat was not in a place where I lived and I have had to travel to and from it. I didn`t have any help. The boat was vandalized several times as well. Things got even more challenging this past summer, when the hiway into Port Alberni, BC was closed so much after the #cameronlakefire.

But now, the boat is at the point of know return! It is said that boats are a " symbol of journey" and "a voyage of life". The challenge that I faced working on this vessel has given me strength and courage to overcome limitations in my life. For this, I am grateful.

\n\t\t\t\t\t\tTom, Koen`s rock-climbing buddy in the late eighties, and since long living in France running an outdoor activities business, is always in for an adventure. A new adventure started with a question about a year ago "You think Sophie and I can row around Corsica in a C23 by the end of this summer? And we`ll bring the dog too!" Yes, that`s possible! If you both start learning how to row straight away!
By the end of the summer they pushed off from a Corsican beach and started their adventure.
Tom, being a professional mountain guide, understands the importance of communication and back-up, so he asked his mom Lien, an avid, life-long sailor herself, to function as safety officer, following along on land by car.
Rowing around any island, big or small, is a serious business, demanding a profound knowledge of the local currents, rock formations, hazardous winds and specific, unusual weather patterns. Painfully demonstrated by the hurricane that hit Corsica only days before they set off!
Prepared for the worse, they loved every bit of the adventure, and so did mom and the dog!

\n\t\t\t\t\t\tWatertight compartments are an essential part of our ocean rowing boats. It`s easy to say `watertight` but how is this tested? Filling each compartment with water would be one way, but the faster and more precise - although possibly very confronting! - solution is to check for airflow. Air can be sucked out of the compartment using a vacuum pump or air can be pumped into each compartment. The result is the same: at least 2 ton\/square meter of pressure is applied to the structure, and will hold if there are no leaks. Test succeeded.
